The Reaction of Ions in the Radiolysis of n-Butane in the Gas Phase

Abstract
The effect of ammonia in the radiolysis of n-butane has been investigated. In low pressure radiolysis, C3H8 and C2-products decrease upon the addition of ammonia while C3H6 increases. C4H8 increases sharply upon the addition of a small amount of ammonia, but it gradually decreases upon further addition. CH4 and H2 are not significantly affected by ammonia. These results have been interpreted in terms of the proton transfer reaction of ammonia with ions, and their rate constants have been estimated. The contribution of the excited ion to the C–C rupture has been concluded to be much more important than that of the excited molecule in low-pressure radiolysis.Keywords
