Abstract
In‐depth interviews with 15 African‐American women reveal that their ideas about and experiences with dysphoria differ markedly from mental health professionals’ notion of dysphoria as a pathological state. For these women, the blues is both a transition mood between feeling down and depression and a signal that they need time for themselves. Keywords
