Abstract
AT the outset the contributor to this distinguished series of lectures must decide whether to discuss a specific problem of preventive medicine or to attempt the ambitious task of assessing its role in the period of which he speaks. In choosing the second possibility I am acutely aware of the difficulties, which are mainly of two kinds. The first is that the incompleteness of data, particularly concerning morbidity, makes it hard to assess accurately the size and character of the task of prevention.
