Abstract
A new method was sought for sterilizing endoscopic instruments. Formaldehyde cabinets are unsatisfactory. Endoscopic instruments do not tolerate autoclaving. A new method of sterilizing by moist heat has been used in the laboratory and shown to be an improvement. It involves immersing the contaminated instrument in a waterbath at 85° C. for one hour. This has become possible since the development of a more heat-resistant cement. In the experiments here reported the method killed most pathogenic organisms, includingMycobacterium tuberculosis, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Proteus vulgaris, andPseudomonas pyocyaneus. Enterococci were not uniformly eliminated by this method. Keywords
