Abstract
Autophagy is the principal catabolic pathway for degradation of damaged and excess organelles and elimination of invading pathogens within subcellular autophagosomes. This is one of the pioneering articles showing that the autophagosomes and their pre-cursors can be considered unique organelles because they do not contain any marker proteins of other subcellular compartments.
