Role of Measles Virus in Skin Lesions and Koplik's Spots

Abstract
Lesions of the skin and oral mucosa (Koplik's spots) in measles share similar clinical and histologic features. Multinucleate giant cells occur in both the epidermis and oral epithelium. Viral microtubular aggregates were found on electron microscopy within nuclei and cytoplasm of the syncytial giant cells. These findings indicate that the measles virus initiates a similar pathologic process in lesions of the skin and oral mucosa.
