Abstract
Storm morphologies and associated intensity profiles are examined using data taken from dense pluviograph networks in East Africa. Different morphologies of storms are illustrated with use of examples for Dar es Salaam, Tanzania and Kampala, Uganda. Generally storms of elliptical form dominate for inland East Africa, but along coastal and lake margins, storms of a more linear form are envisaged as important contributions to rainfall. Storm size, development and form are good indicators of the magnitude of maximum storm depths and intensities. Although storms belonging to several different morphologies may occur the distribution of rainfall with time through a storm appears consistent for the majority: the heaviest falls occur very early in the storm. Keywords
