Zinc Content of Bean Plants in Relation to Deficiency Symptoms and Yield

Abstract
Zinc deficiency in field-grown beans (Phaseolus vulgaris, var. Red Mexican) is shown by a mild general chlorosis, followed by interveinal chlorosis, necrosis, and browning of spots in the leaf mesophyll. Older leaves are more severely affected than young tissue. Deficiency symptoms are associated with about 20 ppm Zn or less in the mature leaves or total top at early bloom stage. Significant increases in dry bean yields were obtained by fertilizing with ZnSO4, even though Zn-deficiency symptoms were not observed in unfertilized plants.
