Abstract
The chemical and physical investigation of the fractions resulting from the differential centrifugation of the water homogenates of cow and pig embryo skin at 5,100 and 20,000 g shows that there are two concurrent processes of different rates in collagen development: the synthesis and accumulation of the polypeptides of collagen protein precursor, and the precollagen and/or collagen fibril formation. The rate of precursor synthesis exceeds the rate of fibril formation in the cow embryo skin up to a definite stage of development (15-17 cm). This correlation is reversed during further development of the embryo skin. The peculiarities of the precursor development are associated with the species'' differences. During collagen development the content of acid mucopolysacharides falls and that of mucoproteins changes inconsiderably. Keywords
