Abstract
This is the first revision of the Guide originally published in 1961.1It has been prepared for the guidance of hospitals contemplating the appointment of a director of medical education and for physicians considering such an appointment. The position is purposely described in general terms so as to apply to most hospitals with internship or residency programs and without major medical school affiliations. The broadened scope and duration of hospital education and the increasing complexity of medical practice have necessitated better organization of graduate and postgraduate education. Hospitals have, therefore, looked to their educational efforts with interest and concern comparable to that exhibited by medical-school authorities on behalf of undergraduate education. Satisfactory administration of a major teaching program can no longer be totally delegated to those who are already heavily committed to medical practice. Part- or full-time supervision of medical education has, therefore, been established in many teaching hospitals.
