Abstract
The nuclear quadrupole resonance frequencies of 35Cl and 115In have been measured in (NH4)2[InCl5H2O] as a function of temperature. The lattice contribution to the field gradients was calculated using a point‐charge model, and a bonding analysis was made in the temperature region where the rigid lattice approximation appears to apply. The individual chlorine resonances were assigned to specific chlorine sites in the lattice. The results of the calculation show that the complex is predominantly ionic with greater covalency for the indium—water bond than for the indium—chlorine bond. It is also shown that the antishielding factor for chlorine must be greater than, or equal to, −13 for this complex. Keywords
