Some Metal(II) Complexes of 1-(o-Aminoacetophenone)-4-Phenythiosemicarbazone: Their Preparation, Characterization, and Antimicrobial Activity

Abstract
Complexes of the Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), Zn(II) and Cd(II) ions with 1-(o-aminoacetophenone)-4-phenylthiosemicarbazone (HoAPT = HL) were prepared and characterized by elemental analysis, conductance measurements, magnetic susceptibilities (at 26°C), reflectance and IR spectral studies. The IR spectra show that the ligand acts in a bidentate and/or tridentate fashion depending on the metal salt used. Enethiolization is confirmed by the pH-titration of HoAPT and its Co(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II) complexes against 0.025M NaOH. On the basis of magnetic and spectral studies, a distorted octahedral structure for the Co(II) complex, square-planar for the Cu(II) and Ni(L)(AcO)·2H2O complexes and mixed stereochemistry (Oh + D4h) for Ni(L)Cl·3H2O are suggested. The formation of the Co(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II) complexes in solution was studied potentiomet-rically and spectrophotometrically. Spectral studies in solution show that the ligand could be used for the microdetermination of Co(II) and Ni(II) ions within a concentration up to 5.8 × 10−5 and 4.9 × 10−5 M, respectively. The antimicrobial activity of HoAPT and its Co(II), Ni(II) and Zn(II) complexes are also investigated.
