Abstract
The Jahn‐Teller theorem is reformulated on the basis of the Hellmann‐Feynman theorem. Examples are given illustrating the conceptual simplicity of the force approach as opposed to the energetics approach. Methods of calculation are outlined and an estimation of the effect is given for the borane (BH3) molecule. Keywords
