Abstract
59 undergraduates at Ohio University rated 44 words, presumed related to three hypothesized experiential referents of sense of self (body awareness, social role, and value), on the semantic differential. Factor analysis yielded five factors as opposed to the three predicted. Words related to the bodily referent clustered as did value referent words. A third set of words, thought related to the social role referent, however, showed no clear clustering patterns. Results are seen as offering but tentative support for Waterbor's “tripartite sense of self.” An alternate “bipartite sense of self” is suggested. Keywords
