Abstract
Longitudinal studies of 152 children from Keneba, The Gambia, and 45 from Namulonge, Uganda, investigating the relationship between growth and different types of infection in the two areas are reported and their relevance to the patterns of malnutrition seen in Africa are discussed. The relative ineffectiveness of curative medicine in the real health problems of rural Africa and the need for prevention are stressed. Keywords
