Abstract
The progressive stage of exophthalmos appeared 2 weeks-25 yrs. following thyroidectomy. In most patients the BMR was below normal, in 4 patients it was above normal. The surgical technic used in all patients followed the principles described by Naffziger. The annulus of Zinn must not be incised. Compression bandage and temporary suture of the eyelids are important immediately following decompression. The amt. of recession is usually in direct proportion to the degree of exophthalmos. Gradual recession may be expected over a period of yrs. following decompression.
