Geographic information systems, spatial data analysis and spatial modelling: an introduction

Abstract
Today, geographic information systems (GIS) incorporate many state-of-the-art principles such as relational database management, powerful graphics algorithms, interpolation, zoning and simplified network analysis, yet what is termed spatial analysis and modelling is often no more than map data manipulation such as polygon overlay and buffering. The lack of analytical and modelling functions is widely recognised as a major deficiency of current systems.
