Abstract
Defects in the tunica media are well-known in the cerebral arteries. In the present study similar media defects have been found to occur also in other muscular arteries, especially the splenic, renal, mesenteric and coronary. In comparison with the defects in the cerebral arteries those in other arteries examined were generally smaller and less frequent. The defects were characteristically located on the distal carina at the point of branching. Several defects were found in various arteries of 2 neonates. The defects may have significance in the development of some aneurysms of obscure etiology. As the arterial wall at the sites of the defects has no power of contraction, they may produce turbulence and other circulatory disturbances. The media defects may influence the location of atheroma and other pathologic changes. Keywords
