Abstract
Lactating dairy cows stanchioned in controlled environment chambers were exposed to 650-1600 Stomoxys calcitrans (L.) per cow for periods of 5-8 days. Although the cows were noticeably bothered by the flies, milk production significantly decreased in only one trial. In another trial, the flies appeared to slightly increase milk production. It is concluded, however, that the tested populations of stable flies did not have an adverse effect on the milk-production response of stanchioned dairy cows with free access to a high-energy ration. Keywords
