Melioidosis

Abstract
Melioidosis is a relatively rare tropical disease [caused by Pseudomonas pseudomallei] that can occur in individuals up to several years after their return from an endemic area. The disease has a wide spectrum of manifestations. In its pulmonary form, it can present as an acute penumonia or mimic tuberculosis roentgenographically. The septicemic form of the disease is associated with a high mortality, and massive doses of antibiotics may be necessary to control the infection. Awareness of this disease is of importance due to the large number of Americans returning from a highly endemic area.
