Waveform optimization design of an AC converter machine

Abstract
A square wave machine with 115 degrees rectangular blocks is shown to be theoretically capable of 12.8% more power than a conventionally designed sinusoidal wave machine of the same size. The comparative test results of two 5 kW synchronous machines confirm that the optimized machine can output 8.52% more power than a conventionally designed synchronous machine of the same size and temperature rise. The efficiency gain is about 2% compared to a sine wave machine peak efficiency of 85%. The ripple component of the rectified voltage for the square wave machine is shown to be markedly reduced.
