Abstract
The material included in the study was one cultivar of each of the spring forms of six-row barley, two-row barley, wheat and oats grown from 18 to 26 years in field plots. Base temperatures were calculated as the temperatures at which the correlation coefficients between the mean temperature and heat sum are zero. These base temperatures varied greatly between cultivars, sowing dates, growth periodes and were sensitive to normal year to year variation in climatic and other factors. The zero correlations criterion, therefore, does not seem suitable for choosing base temperatures In heat sum calculations. Zero degrees Celcius is recommended as base temperature for cereal species under nordic conditions.
