Monoclonal Internal Image Anti-Idiotypic Antibodies of Hepatitis B Surface Antigen

Abstract
Using a monoclonal antibody (Ab) to hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) we have raised 6 monoclonal anti-idiotypic Ab’s. If the anti-idiotype is behaving as an ‘internal image’ of HBsAg, then, like antigen it should bind polyclonal anti-HBsAg sera raised in different species where it is less likely that idiotypes unrelated to antigen binding would be identical. Using polyclonal goat, swine, rabbit and human anti-HBsAg sera in an indirect immunofluorescence technique we have shown that two of the hybridomas stained strongly (Fig. 1). No staining was seen with various control sera or with hybridomas of unrelated specificities.
