Abstract
This article concerns observations made by the author during the course of two recent tours of medical facilities in China. It discusses the new and significant archeological discoveries in China of a 50 year-old woman who had been buried over 2,000 years ago. The detailed autopsy description of this woman revealed a surprisingly advanced level of medical understanding in the China of the Han dynasty. The current integration of Western with Chinese traditional medicine has resulted in China in the discovery of acupuncture anesthesia and Chinese pharmacology. The development of a new and comprehensive health-care delivery system has had a great deal to do with the development of the concepts of barefoot doctors, mobile teaching and research units and health stations which all facilitate the delivery of medical care to the public. New medical attitudes in China include the shortening of the medical school curriculum and the reorganization of teaching materials to reflect the current integration of Eastern with Western medical concepts and the emphasis upon the delivery of primary health care. Keywords
