Parakeratosis of the Tongue — a Unique Histopathologic Lesion in the Zinc-Deficient Squirrel Monkey

Abstract
A study was made of the pathology in zinc-deficient monkeys. Lesions of the mucosal lining in the tongues of 9 male, weanling, squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus) fed a low zinc diet were identified in 2 experiments. They were compared with controls given the same diet supplemented with 15 µg of zinc/g of diet. Tissue changes of the epidermal mucosa of the monkeys fed the unsupplemented diet were characterized by hyperplasia which was more extensive over the anterior dorsum and less prominent on the ventral surface. Parakeratosis was present particularly over the anterior dorsum of this organ with keratohyalin granules absent or comparatively sparse in many regions. Atrophy of the underlying muscle fibers was found in one monkey fed the low zinc diet.
