Abstract
THE PREVALENCE of overweight continues to increase in the US adult population.1-3 In the 12 years between the Second National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES II, 1976 through 1980) and NHANES III (1988 through 1991), the prevalence of overweight in US adults increased from 25% to 33%.2 The prevalence of overweight also increased by similar magnitudes among all sex and age groups of children and adolescents.1 Obesity in children has been associated with subsequent morbidity and mortality in adulthood.4 These trends have persisted despite our nation's intense preoccupation with weight.5Keywords
