Abstract
Acceptance by the alcoholic of his illness is a major step in successful treatment. Currently little or no studies of the factors leading to acceptance have been reported. Acceptance is viewed as being whole-hearted or half-hearted. The former is achieved by surrender. The latter results from compliance which is held to be only partial surrender. Compliance is defined as "a willingness not to argue or resist but the cooperation a bit grudging." Such half-hearted cooperation blocks therapy. It must be unmasked and removed before treatment can progress.
