Observations of H2O maser emission in southern galaxies

Abstract
The first observations in a search for H2O masers in southern galaxies involved objects containing previously reported maser emission. The maser in NGC 4945 was confirmed, but no emission exceeding 0.5 Jy was detected in NGC 253 or in N159 of the Large Magellanic Cloud. The maser in NGC 4945 is associated with the nucleus of the galaxy and has a luminosity (165L ) at least an order of magnitude greater than any maser of our Galaxy.
