Abstract
The health care laws recognize the special role of professionals in employment relationships by granting them the right to join together to pursue their collective goals. Nurses are recognized as professionals with a unique community of interest. Labor law, therefore, permits bargaining units that are composed exclusively of nurses. Virginia Cleland discusses the key aspects of professionalism recognized by labor law. In additon, she identifies three provisions which will enhance the professional role of nursing, she states, if included in negotiated contracts. Enhancing the professional role of nursing is the responsibility of each nurse. A nurse administrator, however, faces even greater responsibility in relation to nursing's role development. One's attitude and choices as a nurse manager within a health care facility affect the scope of nursing practice within that facility and ultimately affect nursing. Decisions made through shared governance and programs of accountability shape nursing practice. Your approach to contract provisions that relate to “conditions of work” influences the character and climate for nursing practice developed within your situation. Keywords
