Abstract
Earlier work showed that aqueous extracts of mammalian testicle contain a factor that dramatically increases the permeability of tissues to injected fluids. No naturally occurring diffusing factor has been isolated. Hyaluronic acid, a muco-poly-saccharide obtained from the mucoproteins of vitreous humor and umbilical cord, is hydrolyzed, with a decrease in viscosity, by bacterial enzymes. This paper reports a detailed study of the association between the 2 properties[long dash]diffusion in tissues and hyaluronidase activity[long dash]in the case of testicular extracts, certain bacterial filtrates, and snake venom. The exptl. results support the belief that diffusion in the skin is due to hyaluronidase activity. This publication has 11 references indexed in Scilit:
