Abstract
The radiolytic decomposition and thermal annealing at 75° and 130° of hydrated and anhydrous potassium trioxalatoferrate(III) has been followed using Mössbauer spectroscopy. Using the Mössbauer parameters to identify the oxidation state and co-ordination of the radiolytic products, it is shown that both compounds decompose to an octahedral FeII compound via a thermally unstable FeII intermediate, which is four-co-ordinate in the hydrated but six-co-ordinate in the anhydrous form. On thermal annealing, some of the unstable FeII intermediate reverts to the initial FeIII compound, while the remainder is converted to the octahedral FeII compound. The rates of decomposition and thermal annealing vary markedly from the hydrate to the anhydrous compound. Keywords
