Abstract
This article charts a thin history of cross-referencing from the classical and medieval commonplace, through print and the index, to hypermedia databases. Cultural practices of early printers are considered in relation to the category “author” and hierarchical structures of textual organization. The challenge to these concepts posed by current uses of hypermedia and electronic writing spaces is evaluated. Keywords
