Abstract
Carter M. R. (1971) A method of analysing patterns of tourist activity in a large rural area. The Highlands and Islands of Scotland, Reg. Studies 5, 29–37. The paper examines critically a method used to analyse the distribution of tourist activity in the Highlands and Islands of Scotland. Since the budget was small, it was necessary to obtain information by means of a questionnaire survey. The questionnaire was designed primarily to obtain information about two general “indicators” of the distribution of tourist activity—the location of tourist “person-nights” and the pattern of tourist traffic flows. Two main problems arose—to establish a suitable sampling frame and to devise methods of analysing the complex data obtained. The approach to solving these problems is described, together with the main results.
