Analysis and Chemical Confirmation of Citrinin in Barley

Abstract
A method is described for the quantitative estimation of citrinin in barley by extraction of acidified grain with chloroform. After filtration, the citrinin concentration is estimated visually or densitometrically, using quantitative TLC, by comparison with a citrinin standard. The method will precisely determine concentrations of 0.5 ppm, with a lower limit of detection of about 0.2 ppm. A chemical confirmatory test involving formation of the acetate of citrinin is also described.
