Abstract
The rigorous wave theory solution is given for light scattering by a cylinder parallel to a system of interference fringes. The theory can be used to predict optimum angles for light collection in fringe anemometry, and applied to a novel method of particle sizing. Comparison with geometrical optics suggests that for this approximation to be valid not only must the scatterer be large, but also the fringe spacing must be large compared with the wavelength.
