"This Time... is a Very Good One, if...!"

Abstract
FIRST of all, let me express my deep gratitude to you for the privilege of serving you as president of this association for the past year. Many members, I am sure, deserved this position more than I do, but I think there can be none who regard the honor with greater respect than I do. I use the word "respect" both because of my affection for this association and its members and because I have always been impressed by the eminence in the field of American surgery which the organization enjoys. It is small wonder, then, that membership has instilled in me a sense of achievement and a special pride. Recognition in the form of election as your President thus becomes a signal honor, indeed. I must confess that I am disquieted by the responsibility of the President's Address. No doubt my predecessors in this office will agree with me
