Recovery of Hydrocarbons from Lung Tissue in Fatal Ingestion of Furniture Polish: Characterization by Gas Chromatography and Infrared Spectroscopy

Abstract
A fatal case of hydrocarbon poisoning following the ingestion of Old English furniture polish is presented. Clinical and roentgenologic findings are correlated with the pathologic effects of petroleum hydrocarbons on the body. A method for the separation of hydrocarbons from lung tissue and for the characterization of the hydrocarbons by gas chromatography and infrared spectroscopy is outlined.
