Abstract
REPORTED CASES of chlorate poisoning are not rare. In many of these cases the use of chlorates was intended for medical purposes, particularly in infections of the throat. Chlorates have also been employed as a toothpaste ingredient and poisoning has occurred from such use. The ease whereby the words "chloride" and "chlorate" can be interchanged by mistake has been, and still is, a cause of accidental poisoning. Our case falls in this category.Witthaus, in 1911, collected 155 cases of which 116 were fatal. Eighteen of these were either suicidal or homicidal. Cochran and Smith reported a case of Bright's disease in which potassium chlorate had mistakenly been given instead of potassium chloride. There was evidence that the patient took approximately 35 gm. over a period of 3 days. Death occurred on the 5th day after the last dose.
