Abstract
We present a theoretical model to interpret the radial velocity and velocity dispersion behavior of the emission lines in intermediate polars. Our assumption is that the emission lines originate in the gas stream which is diverted out of the orbital plane by the dipolar magnetic field of the white dwarf and is funnelled towards the star surface. We have applied the model to the intermediate polars TX Col and EX Hya. Our study suggests that accretion on to the white dwarf occurs between 9 and 12 Rwd from the primary in TX Col, and between 4 and 6 Rwd in EX Hya.Keywords
