Abstract
The Toxicology Program of the College of American Pathologists is the oldest voluntary proficiency testing program in toxicology. It is the most varied and sophisticated program available at this time. The program encompasses primarily: therapeutic monitoring of a variety of widely used drugs; drug overdose samples employing sedatives, tranquilizers and analgesics, and other drugs normally used therapeutically but present in toxic concentration; and drugs subject to abuse. Where possible, both the parent drug and principal active metabolites are presented. Each series contains both lyophilized serum and urine samples. At least one matched serum/urine pair is presented. Volatiles may be present in the diluent for the serum sample. A clinical history to limit the universe of drugs to be sought accompanies the specimens. A comparison of the results of therapeutic monitoring of two anticonvulsants by participants is included to demonstrate overall improvement in performance by participants in the time period studied.
