Abstract
Larvae and pupae in field populations of the elm spanworm, Ennomos subsignarius (Hübner), are colored variously. A preliminary study related these variations to population density; individually reared larvae were light and aggregated larvae were dark. The possibility that pheromones controlled color was investigated and discounted. The color relationships between instars, rearing density, and paired rearings with fall cankerworm, Alsophila pometaria (Harris), are discussed.
