Abstract
This paper reports a study of first admissions to psychiatric facilities in Dublin. It forms part of a survey whose objects were to investigate the extent and characteristics of hospitalized psychiatric illness in Dublin, to make comparisons between mental illness in Dublin and in other cities, to observe the outcome of a first-admitted cohort of patients followed up for five years and to examine the differences, on admission and in outcome, between those receiving Local Authority and those receiving private care. Keywords
