Prednisone in the Treatment of Rheumatoid Arthritis

Abstract
THE new adrenocortical steroid prednisone1 was used in the treatment of 33 patients with rheumatoid arthritis.Prednisone and the related steroid prednisolone have been shown to possess a high degree of adrenocortical activity2 and to be highly effective clinically as antirheumatic and inflammatory agents.3 4 5 So far, in addition to rheumatoid arthritis and allied conditions, certain allergic disorders,6 bronchial asthma6 7 8 9 and pemphigus vulgaris10 have been reported to respond. Bunim et al.,11 studying the metabolic effects of prednisone and prednisolone, observed no retention of sodium or increased loss of potassium as a result of their administration.
