Abstract
The mean elevation of the continents is +840 m and that of the oceans —3,800 m. Extreme elevations are, respectively, +8,882 m and —11,500 m. The mean elevation of the earth’s surface, with respect to present sea-level, is —2,440 m. Erosion processes are constantly transferring material from the lands to the sea in the way that James Hutton described in 1795 in his Theory of the Earth. This section considers the magnitudes and areal variations of both erosion and sedimentation on a world scale.
