Abstract
The sensitization of biacetyl phosphorescence has been used to study the triplet states of benzene and toluene in the undiluted (neat) liquids. The results are not consistent with the expected triplet—triplet transfer and suggest that the transferring species is a form of the excimer. For benzene, this species is found to have a lifetime of 1±0.5×10−8 sec, whereas in toluene it is not detected. Upon dilution of the benzene by a factor of 7 with hexane, biacetyl phosphorescence sensitization is no longer detectable. Keywords
