The Differential Effects of Relocation on Nursing Home Patients

Abstract
Four groups (25 each) of institutionalized aged patients were matched by age, sex, medical diagnosis, and overall level of functioning (PULSES). Pre- and posttest measurements on ADL, Raven's Progressive Matrices, MSQ, Life Satisfaction, and Personality Adjustment were administered to determine the effects of relocation on three experimental populations in contrast to a stationary control group. Analysis of mortality and release rates suggests that PULSES is effective in predicting an individual's ability to withstand the trauma of relocation. Factors related to successful adjustment to a new nursing home were isolated.
