Abstract
Summary The purpose of the present study was to ascertain the quantitative relations of immunologically interesting cells, lymphocytes, plasma cells, and granulocytes in chronic arthritis. The study is based on histologic samples taken at operation. The series comprised a total of 193 cases, 161 of them rheumatoid arthritis, 20 peripheral arthritis of ankylosing spondylitis, and 12 juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. The cell accumulations (follicles) were found in all groups and in all phases of disease. In incipient cases they contained more lymphocytes than in those of longer duration. The amount of plasma cells tended to increase with duration of the disease; also rheumatoid factor positivity in cases of rheumatoid arthritis. In synovial membrane outside the follicles no essential difference in cell reaction was found. The significance of the findings in the pathogenesis of chronic arthritis is discussed. Keywords
