Abstract
We have applied the forced oscillatory technique of DuBois to measure the resistance of the respiratory system in infants from the newborn period to the age of 15 months. We have compiled normal data in this age group and related conductance to body length. Twenty infants with bronchiolitis were studied during the acute phase of their disease, and 10 were followed for periods up to 11 months. We found both inspiratory and expiratory resistance to be elevated. In all infants we found expiratory resistance to be greater than inspiratory resistance and suggest that this may be due to dynamic narrowing of the airways on expiration. Follow-up studies revealed that three patients had evidence of airway obstruction even when "well."Keywords
