Abstract
In the context of the "universal seesaw mechanism," implemented in the framework of left-right-symmetric models, we discuss a particular scheme which allows the determination of the Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix elements in terms of the quark masses. By taking into account the experimental values of Vus and Vcb, we obtain constraints on the strange- and the top-quark masses. After a brief discussion of the gauge-boson sector we also show that the flavor-changing neutral-current gauge interactions which arise in the model are safely suppressed and do not give rise to effects in conflict with the known experimental limits.
