Abstract
Previous observation of micron-sized particle removal from optical surfaces by pulsed laser irradiation were explained on the basis of a simple analytical model. The model was based on the idea that thermal expansion during the pulse generated forces and accelerations large enough to detach absorbing particles. Several simplifying assumptions were made in developing the model. In this work more exact and detailed treatment of the laser pulse and thermal transport effects is presented. The previous approximate model is shown to be semiquantitatively accurate.© (1992) COPYRIGHT SPIE--The International Society for Optical Engineering.
